Bonnaire made his Test debut in 2004, against Scotland in the Six Nations, while playing his club rugby for Bourgoin. A rangy, powerful back-row forward, he became a regular member of the international setup, playing six games at the 2007 Rugby World Cup as France exited at the semi-final stage. In 2007 he also agreed a switch to Clermont Auvergne at club level. During the 2010 Six Nations Bonnaire was drafted into the starting lineup against Wales in Cardiff, winning his 50th Test cap.
Bonnaire was a key part of Clermont's Top 14 winning side in 2010 and appeared in all five of France's games in the 2011 Six Nations - starting four in the back-row and coming off the bench against England at No.8. Bonnaire went to the 2011 World Cup and played a key role in their charge to the final of the tournament.
