Vuna grew up playing union in Auckland before being scouted by the New Zealand Warriors NRL side, for whom he would play five times before switching to the Newcastle Knights in 2007. There he found greater success and regular first-team football, playing international rugby league for Tonga before signing a deal to return to the 15-man code with the Melbourne Rebels in 2010. Upon signing he declared that he would be chasing Wallabies selection and made a strong start to his bid, scoring five tries in the Rebels' opening two trial games against Tonga in January 2011. International recognition followed a year later, with caps against Wales in an injury-affected Wallabies side.
