Sharks hooker Craig Burden has been called up to the South Africa squad for their Rugby Championship clash with Argentina next weekend.

The 27-year-old replaces Bismarck du Plessis in the squad after his provincial team-mate suffered a serious knee injury in Saturday's 27-6 victory over the Pumas in Cape Town.

Burden had been on the Springboks' standby list and is joined in the travelling squad by four further position players - hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, lock Juandre Kruger, prop Dean Greyling and scrum-half Jano Vermaak.

"We only finalised the touring squad after the Test against Argentina at Newlands on Saturday afternoon as we wanted to first assess the injury situation," Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said.

"It's never nice to leave behind players, but we're only permitted to travel with 26 players. The players that stay behind will benefit from game time in the Currie Cup and will certainly be in the selection frame when we select the squad for the next leg."

Following their return from Argentina, the Springboks will name a 28-man squad to tour Australia and New Zealand.
