Last seasonSeventh overall, second in Australian Conference; the Brumbies were surprise packets under former Springboks coach Jake White, impressing throughout the season and holding a finals spot in every round except that which mattered after a final-game loss to the Blues - against whom White said "everything went out the window".
Key manWallabies captain David Pocock ranks among the premier flankers in world rugby, and his capture from Western Force can only improve the Brumbies. Known primarily as an outstanding fetcher, he is also a damaging ball runner and tackler who adds strike across the field.
Rising starClyde Rathbone is hardly unknown with 52 Super Rugby caps and 26 Wallabies caps, but the winger has to prove himself again after quitting the sport in 2009, due to injuries, and overcome personal issues. Says he's not back to make up the numbers, and easy to see him providing X-factor.
Season previewDid they punch above their weight in 2012, or was the season simply stage one in the rebirth of Australia's most successful franchise? Will they be steeled by that loss to the Blues? They should figure prominently atop the Australian Conference if Matt Toomua, Christian Lealiifano, Nic White, Jesse Mogg and captain Ben Mowen maintain and improve upon the 2012 breakout form.
