Bill Beaumont has been named as the new chairman of the Six Nations Council.

Beaumont's role was confirmed at the recent meeting of the six Unions in Rome and his three-year term will begin immediately. Beaumont replaces Welshman David Pickering and he will remain on the council as the Welsh Rugby Union representative.

Former British & Irish Lion Beaumont is currently chairman of the Rugby Football Union and has also represented the organisation on the International Rugby Board Council - a spell which included four years as vice-chairman.

"It is a privilege to be involved with the biggest annual rugby competition in the world," Beaumont said. "I would like to thank the outgoing chairman, David Pickering, for his work over the last four years, and I look forward to working with him and the rest of the council."

Ireland's Pat Whelan was elected as Six Nations vice-chairman, also with immediate effect. Whelan has previously acted as selector and manager to the Ireland team.
