Wales prop Craig Mitchell is set to miss the rest of this season after dislocating his shoulder during the Six Nations victory over Ireland on Saturday.

Mitchell has undergone surgery and is expected to be sidelined for 12 to 16 weeks, according to Prav Mathema, the Welsh Rugby Union national performance medical manager.

Mitchell's Ospreys colleague Adam Jones, who has played just 20 minutes' rugby since suffering an elbow injury in January, has been called into the Wales squad as a replacement for Mitchell ahead of next Saturday's Six Nations appointment with France in Paris.

"Craig has now had corrective surgery after dislocating his right shoulder," said Mathema. "The operation went very well and we would now expect him to be back playing within a 12 - 16 week period."

Jones returned to Magners League action two weekends ago against Glasgow Warriors after a seven week lay-off of his own with an elbow injury and will join up with his national team-mates at the WRU National Centre of Excellence on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Scarlets wing George North has also now been confirmed as an official squad member and is in contention for selection ahead of the trip to France.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland, whose side can still lay claim to the Championship title if they record a big win over France and Ireland beat Grand Slam-chasing England, will name the side for the Stade de France clash on Wednesday.
