Garuet-Lempirou played his entire career for club side Lourdes while establishing himself as one of the premier props in world rugby.

After making his debut for France in November 1983 against Australia, Garuet-Lempirou earned the dubious honour of being the first French player to pick up a red card in a Test match. The misdemeanour occurred during France's Test with Ireland at the Parc des Princes and referee Clive Norling expelled the prop from the field charged with making contact with the eye of Irish flanker John O'Driscoll. The then President of the French Rugby Federation Albert Ferrasse labelled the prop "a fool" in the post-match banquet.

After copping his three month ban, Garuet-Lempirou clearly learned his lesson and became France's first-choice tight-head for the 1987 World Cup. Playing a key part in their historic 30-24 win over Australia in the semi-finals of the tournament, Garuet-Lempirou started for the French in the final. But he was unable to prevent them coming undone against a resolute All Blacks team.

After playing his final game for France in February 1990, Garuet-Lempirou went onto play for Lourdes for a further year before retiring in 1991.
