Profile

Arthur Hamersley was a tall, powerful forward, with a reputation for working tirelessly in the scrum. He played in England's first international in 1871 and captained them in his last in 1874, after which he emigrated to New Zealand, helping to establish the game there. He was one of the founders of South Canterbury and then the Canterbury Union. In 1889 he moved to Canada where he continued his sporting missionary work, helping to found Vancouver RFC and was the first president of the British Columbia Rugby Union. He retuned to England, became an MP, and in World War One was a Lieutenant Colonel, serving on the Western Front in 1917. He was a barrister by profession.
