Marcos Ayerza made his international debut for Argentina while playing amateur club rugby for Cardinal Newman in Buenos Aires. His first professional contract came with Guinness Premiership side Leicester in 2006, by which time he was already an established international.
In his first season with the Tigers he helped them to a losing effort in the Heineken Cup final, although he was banned for a punch on Stade Francais flanker Remy Martin during the quarter-final at Welford Road. His ban meant that he missed the Anglo-Welsh Cup final, in which the Tigers defeated the Ospreys. Since then however, he has been a key component of the side which won the 2009 and 2010 Premiership alongside Martin Castrogiovanni.
He was a member of the Argentina squad that lit up the 2007 Rugby World Cup and made two appearances during the tournament, against Georgia during the group stages and against France in the third-place playoff at the Parc des Princes.
Since the World Cup he has struggled to break in to the first team for the Pumas, making a number of replacement appearances behind Martin Scelzo and Juan-Pablo Orlandi. However, he has been named in their squad for the 2011 World Cup and will hope to gatecrash the Argentinean front-row.
