Steenkamp made his Test debut against Scotland at Murrayfield in 2004, but failed to hold down a place in the national squad due to s series of injuries. That changed with a recall in 2007 and the powerful loose-head went on to play two matches in South Africa's march to the Rugby World Cup crown.
He featured throughout the Tri-Nations and the autumn internationals the following year and went on to play against the British & Irish Lions in 2009. In 2010 he entered a rich vein of form as the Bulls clinched back-to-back Super 14 titles and continued his run into the Test season, where he was an influential presence for the Boks up until a broken arm ended his hopes of touring Europe.
In April 2011 Steenkamp was announced as one of three high-profile signings, along with All Black Luke McAlister and Wallaby Luke Burgess, for Top 14 giants Toulouse.
