Profile

Munster and Ireland's Denis Leamy has matured into one of the finest back-rowers in the European game, having played all three positions at international level.

Leamy won the Munster Schools Cup with Rockwell in 1997 before graduating through the ranks to be capped by Ireland at Schoolboy and U21 levels. In 1998 the 16-year-old Leamy played against an Australia schools team containing both George Smith and David Lyons in the back-row.

Leamy's short temper landed him in trouble during his time with the U21s, as an incident at schools level saw him banned for the U21 World Cup in 2002.

Leamy made his debut for Munster at the age of 19 after being offered a development contract by coach Declan Kidney. Prior to the 2003-04 season Leamy moved onto a full professional contract with Munster, and was called up to win his first full international cap against the USA in November 2004.

Leamy made his Six Nations debut on the open-side flank against Italy in 2005, and made his first appearance against the All Blacks in the autumn series later that year.

Leamy cemented his place as one of Ireland's most valuable players of the next two seasons, helping Ireland to Triple Crowns in 2006 and 2007 before he was selected in Ireland's squad for the 2007 World Cup. Leamy started all of Ireland's World Cup games from the base of the scrum, but was unable to stop his side slipping out of the tournament.

The highlights of Leamy's career thus far have undoubtedly been his two Heineken Cup wins with Munster, first in 2006 against Biarritz and subsequently against Toulouse in 2008, where he scored Munster's sole try.

Following Heineken Cup glory with Muster, Leamy endured a long lay-off with a shoulder injury. He returned for Munster against the All Blacks in November, but lasted only 25 minutes before a knock to the shoulder forced him off. He missed Ireland's autumn series and upon his return for Munster was unlucky to sustain a serious knee injury against the Scarlets in the Celtic League.

Leamy remained a key part of the Munster and Ireland side. And with more than 50 caps to his name, he will bring a huge amount of experience to the Ireland World Cup squad.
