A versatile prop, Deon Carstens made his Test debut against Scotland at Murrayfield in a 21-6 defeat and a week later he won his second cap in a 53-3 thrashing by England at Twickenham.
He did not make another Test appearance for four years with his versatility sometimes working against him but he did make the Springboks squad to play the British & Irish Lions in 2009. He came on as a replacement in the first Test in Durban as the home side scraped a narrow 26-21 victory and a substitute appearance in the third Test defeat.
Carstens hails from Western Province but made his senior provincial debut for the Sharks in 2001, before moving to Aviva Premiership club Saracens in 2010. He returned to South Africa in 2011 and played for the Stormers and Western Province with injuries forcing him into retirement in 2013.
