Profile

Santiago Phelan took control of the Argentina national team following the departure of Marcello Loffreda after the World Cup in 2007.

Phelan played his whole career for Club Atletico San Isidro (CASI) in Buenos Aries, Argentina, and won 44 caps for the Pumas. His first cap came at Number 8 against Uruguay in 1997, but he won the bulk of his caps from blindside flanker. He played at the World Cups in 1999 and 2003, but he was forced to retire early due to injury following the final group game in 2003.

Following his retirement, he took up coaching with a spell at his old club CASI and Argentina A before he was confirmed as the successor to Loffreda. The success of the Argentina side at the 2007 World Cup, where they finished third, means that he will be under huge pressure to succeed.

Phelan's side won his first Test in charge 21-15 against a touring Scotland, but were defeated 26-14 in the return match. Phelan then took his Pumas to South Africa to play against the Springboks for Nelson Mandela's birthday celebrations, but his depleted team were crushed 63-9.
