South Africa coach Peter de Villiers has recalled John Smit at hooker for the Springbok's Rugby World Cup quarter-final showdown with Australia in Wellington on Sunday.

Smit is selected ahead of Bismarck du Plessis in one of three changes to the side that muscled past Samoa in their final pool clash against Samoa last Friday. Gurthro Steenkamp packs down at loose-head in the place of Tendai Mtawarira while Jean de Villiers fills the void at inside centre left by Frans Steyn who suffered a tournament-ending shoulder injury in the game against Samoa.

South Africa: P Lambie; J P Pietersen, J Fourie, J de Villiers, B Habana; M Steyn, F du Preez; G Steenkamp, J Smit (capt), J du Plessis, D Rossouw, V Matfield, H Brussow, S Burger, P Spies.
