Dunedin police are investigating an alleged sexual assault in the city involving a Lions rugby player, according to reports in New Zealand.
The alleged incident took place following the Lions' 26-22 victory over the Highlanders in their Super Rugby match at Carisbrook on Saturday. Police confirmed that an incident had taken place early on Sunday morning involving an 18-year-old female but did not offer any more details, although reports claim that the complaint was made by a University of Otago student.
Lions team manager Mustapha Boomgaard said that the touring team were not aware of any potential incident until they were contacted by the New Zealand media for comment.
"We have heard nothing from the [Dunedin] police, the [Otago University] or any individuals," Boomgaard told rugby365 from New Zealand.
Otago University communications manager Megan McPherson said the incident was a "police matter".
Meanwhile the Lions are reportedly set to leave Ellis Park for a move to Soweto's Soccer City as relations with their equity partner the Guma Group reach breaking point.
The move to Soweto could raise doubts over the viability of Ellis Park, which hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup final and has been a long-term home for the Golden Lions and Transvaal Rugby.
