Rene Ranger burst onto the scene in his first full season for the Blues in 2009, with his exciting running and trademark sidesteps dazzling opposition defences. He had previously played for New Zealand Sevens and he was rewarded for his impressive form with selection in the Junior All Blacks squad. His ascent to the top of the game in New Zealand was completed following another outstanding Super Rugby season in 2010 with his first cap coming against Wales later in the year and he made his first start in an All Blacks jersey against South Africa in July the same year. But he fell out of favour and in 2013 headed to Europe, signing a lucrative three-year deal with Montpellier.
