Profile

Northampton Saints' Ben Foden is a versatile and exciting talent and has played at scrum-half, fullback and on the wing for England.

Foden joined the promoted Northampton Saints at the start of the 2008-09 season having spent four years with Sale Sharks. During that time at the Sharks, he notched up over 60 appearances mostly at scrum-half, the position he played for England's age group teams. His desire to play at No.9 led to him leaving Sale as they couldn't offer him a regular start there due to the presence of England's Richard Wigglesworth and Wales' Dwayne Peel. His move to Saints brought with it the opportunity to return to his preferred position, where his electric pace and ability to wrong foot a defender with elusive running skills have proved equally deadly.

In the colours of the Saints, Foden eventually settled at fullback, with some stunning displays during the 2009-10 season earning him a place in the England squad for the 2010 Six Nations. Later that year he cemented his place as England's first-choice fullback, his early flirtation with scrum-half shelved after some strong form. Foden was a key member of the side that beat Australia twice in 2010 and also started all of England's Six Nations games as they came up short of a Grand Slam in 2011.

In March, following a Saints win over Wasps, Foden was arrested following an altercation with a taxi driver in London, but both Northampton and the RFU were happy to let the issue lie after he accepted a police caution. On the pitch, Foden continued to shine and played a key role in the Saints' charge to the Heineken Cup final.

Foden was later selected in England's World Cup squad, holding off the challenge of Delon Armitage to retain the fullback shirt during England's disappointing campaign. In the 2012 Six Nations, Foden kept his fullback shirt despite Mike Brown's best efforts. But he was moved on to the wing during England's tour of South Africa with first Brown and then Alex Goode taking the fullback's berth.

Going into the 2012-13 season, Foden was firmly in the England mix after starting well for the Saints but he sustained a serious ankle injury against Bath and was sidelined for a lengthy spell.
