NA4 set for kick off

April 6, 2007

The first match of the International Rugby Board's (IRB) North America 4 Tournament is set to take place on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Qualcomm Rugby Complex in San Diego, Calif., and will feature a fierce battle between the two U.S. Teams, the Hawks and the Falcons.

Both the U.S. Teams have spent this week training at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center preparing for this match as it's a key step in the USA's Rugby World Cup Team development and selection process.

"The NA 4 was developed by the IRB global strategic investment program, which involves a considerable number of high performance, tournament and infrastructure initiatives that were designed to increase the competitiveness of international rugby. The positioning of the IRB NA 4 alongside the Churchill Cup, which starts on May 13, along with some pre-World Cup matches ensures that the U.S. public will have unprecedented exposure to international rugby this year," Men's National Team Coach Thorburn said.

"This match is primarily for player development and getting our team to where it needs to be for the Rugby World Cup," Thorburn added. "As a selector for the USA Rugby World Cup Team, I will really be looking to see how these players react in high pressure match situations."

The Hawks/Falcons Match will be directly followed by a local Division I Club match, with OMBAC taking on Belmont Shore at the same location. Admission for these two matches are $10 for adults and $5 for students (with ID) and youth (18-under). Rugby Canada is also planning a match-up for later in the evening between its two National sides, Canada West and Canada East at 5 p.m. in Vancouver, Canada. These two NA4 Matches, although held in separate locations, will make up the first portion of the second annual North America 4 Tournament. The second leg will be held in Stanford, while the third leg will be held in British Columbia.

The second annual IRB North America 4 Tournament will allow each team to face the others twice during the event, with games won and lost determining the score at the end of the match. At the end of the eight-game series, there will be a final match day allowing the teams to face-off in a battle for the NA4 Championship.
