Caley capture three more
June 14, 2000
Glasgow Caledonians have continued their rebuilding for next season with the capture of three highly-rated exiled Scots.
The Super District have real aspirations of winning the Heineken Cup and Welsh-Scottish Cup next term and have enhanced their squad with the signings of Mark McKenzie, Lee Harrison and Jonathan Steel.
Scotland A stand-off McKenzie is the biggest coup as he returns from a successful stint with French First Division side Bourgoin Jallieu.
He is coming to the end of a two-year contract with the Frenchmen where he has been their highest points scorer and he is looking forward to returning home.
McKenzie said: "I have enjoyed my two years with Bourgoin and I have gained a lot from playing top-grade rugby in France.
"Recently I have been impressed with what is happening within the professional game in Scotland.
"Whenever I have seen the Reds or the Reivers play on television it is an exciting style of rugby and I want to become part of that again."
McKenzie should become a Reds player from July after completing his medical and will join up with former Exeter and Scotland Under-21 prop Harrison and current Scotland Under-21 wing Steel.
Steel, formerly of Northampton Saints, will become part of an eight-strong Reds contingent in the Under-21 touring side, who are competing in an international tournament in New Zealand this month.
Reds head coach Richie Dixon said: "These three signings are another good example of what we are trying to achieve with the Reds.
"Mark will bring the Reds experience and reliability and Lee and Jon will offer us great potential for the future."
