Fijians dominate at home of sevens
April 10, 2000

The Nawaka club from Fiji endorsed their favourites tag at the Bells Melrose Millennium sevens on Saturday.
This was the debut at Melrose for the side which contained several players who had taken part in the recent Hong Kong tournament. "It is a long way for us to come and go back again, but we hope we have shown the crowd what sevens rugby is all about," said their French manager, Frederic Laurent. "We just play our game the way we know, and hopefully the people of Melrose will be happy to see us back next year."
However the level of control shown by the Fijians robbed the competition of some of its drama and ability for an upset which has been show in past years.
Christchurch from New Zealand were the dominant force in the other half of the draw, and sure enough it was an all south Pacific final.
However only briefly in the final did the Fijians look to be in any danger, when first wing Darrell Cochrane and then Ged Fraser scored tries to bring the score to 10-12. However the Fijians quickly recomposed themselves and regained control with Eloni Matanitobua running in two quick tries as they finished 26-10 winners.
