Newcastle snap up frontrowers
March 8, 2000
Newcastle boss Rob Andrew has signed London Irish hooker Mike Howe and Cardiff prop Alan Yates.
Both have signed for Newcastle until the end of the season as cover for Irish hooker Ross Nesdale who is recovering from a neck operation and Scotland prop George Graham who dislocated a shoulder last month.
Howe, 26, is Kiwi-born but holds a British passport, while 35-year-old Yates is a former Sale front row.
Andrew felt he needed to back up his young front row of Ian Peel, Ritchie Horton and Mickey Ward with experienced players because he cannot even sit Springbok Marius Hurter on the replacements bench if the Falcons decide to field Va'aiga Tuigamala and John Leslie as their two foreign players.
