January 17, 2000
Hawke's Bay were surprise winners of the Maori Sevens Championship played in Rotorua over the weekend. They defeated King Country 31-17 in the final and beat the fancied Bay of Plenty B side in their semi final, 24-19, after extra time.
The women's final was won by Auckland who beat home side Bay of Plenty, 17-5. This was ample compensation for Auckland who were defeated by the Bay in round robin play.
