'Drop Kronfeld, bring back Lomu' urges Mexted
Auckland
September 29, 1999

In advance of John Hart's naming of the All Blacks side for their opener against Tonga on Sunday, former No 8 Murray Mexted, now a TV commentator in New Zealand, has advocated the inclusion of Jonah Lomu and the omission of Josh Kronfeld.
He feels that Lomu did more than enough in the defeat against Australia at the end of last month and therefore deserves a start. In addition, it would be fitting if Lomu appeared against the country of his father's birth.
Mexted believes that Kronfeld is so crucial to New Zealand's World Cup hopes that no chances should be taken with his fitness and that he should be rested for the opener. Before leaving New Zealand last week
Kronfeld was under an injury cloud and has had a few problems since being in England.
It is widely anticipated in New Zealand that Christian Cullen will start the game against Tonga in the centre, partnering Alama Ieremia and therefore replacing Daryl Gibson, and that Reuben Thorne will play on the blindside flank.
