Ireland "fading away" as preparation continues
Dublin
September 27, 1999

Ireland manager Donal Lenihan has claimed that the Irish squad has been training so well that some of the player's kit won't fit anymore.
"In terms of the physical preparation it has gone excellently. We were very surprised ourselves when we went to get fitted out yesterday and a lot of our players had lost about two inches off the waist"
In his column on Scrum last week Conor O'Shea revealed the players hadn't had a drink for about three weeks - but that they were enjoying the strict regime introduced by coach Warren Gatland.
Lenihan confirmed the upbeat mood in the camp - "Everybody is buzzing. The quality of the training sessions was outstanding. They have lifted themselves certainly to a higher level than anything we have seen. The waiting is over and I think everybody is getting excited."
Gatland added "We're totally focused on the USA and trying to put Australia out of our minds. We feel that we have got a team that on its day can compete with any team for 80 minutes."
