Francois Trinh-Duc held his nerve with a last-gasp penalty as Montpellier shocked Clermont 21-20 at the Stade Marcel Michelin.
Trinh-Duc kicked 18 of the visitors' points, striking the decisive blow from 45 yards when Clermont were penalised in a scrum.
The only try of the match was scored by Fritz Lee, taking advantage of a rolling maul to hand Clermont an 8-6 lead at the break on his first start of the season.
Montpellier fought back after the restart with Trinh-Duc landing two drop goals to go with his four penalties as the visitors secured a first win at Clermont.
Nicolas Mas' yellow card looked like it would prove to be decisive with Clermont taking the lead again, Brock James kicking five penalties overall, only for Trinh-Duc to snatch victory at the death.
