Australia scrum-half Will Genia has undergone successful surgery on his injured right knee.

The Wallabies' skipper limped out of his side's Rugby Championship victory over South Africa last weekend with subsequent scans revealing he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The Australian Rugby Union has since revealed that the 24-year-old has gone under the knife and will now begin a lengthy rehabilitation process. "Wallabies captain and Queensland halfback Will Genia today underwent surgery in Brisbane," the ARU said in a statement.

"A full reconstruction was required of the ACL ligament in his right knee after he sustained the injury during last Saturday night's 26-19 win by the Wallabies over the Springboks in The Rugby Championship Test in Perth.

"Today's procedure went well but Genia will now been sidelined for an estimated six months of rehabilitation before he can return to the field of play."

Genia's injury follows that of regular captain James Horwill and replacement skipper David Pocock with veteran lock Nathan Sharpe set to lead the side against Argentina in Brisbane this weekend and Nick Phipps named at scrum-half.
