The Chiefs have bolstered their squad ahead of the 2012 Super Rugby season with the signing of Highlanders' utility back Robbie Robinson.
The 21-year-old Southland back - who is equally adept at both fly-half and fullback - will line-up at the Waikato franchise next season alongside former New Zealand U20 team-mate Aaron Cruden and Liam Messam.
Robinson announced himself on the New Zealand rugby stage back in 2008 when he first played for Southland. Since then he lined up for the New Zealand U20 side in the 2009 Junior World Championships and in 2010 debuted for the Highlanders in Super Rugby. And he was rewarded for his good form with a call-up to the New Zealand Maori side for the Centenary series.
Robinson - although he has enjoyed his time with the Highlanders - admitted "the opportunity to move north and push for a starting spot with the Chiefs was too good to let slip by. I'm focused on next year being a big one and am looking forward to getting to Hamilton and getting stuck into it".
Chiefs' head coach Dave Rennie is looking forward to his reunion with Robinson. "I had the pleasure to work with Robbie during our U20 World Cup campaign in 2009 where he was very influential in the success of that team," said Rennie.
"He is a good man, has an excellent skill set with the ability to play both 15 and 10. That sort of versatility is crucial for such a demanding campaign".
