Perpignan closed in on a place in the last eight of the Heineken Cup by picking up a bonus point in their ultimately facile 44-9 victory over Benetton Treviso at the Stadio Comunale di Monigio on Saturday afternoon.
Although they went into the game lying third in Pool 5, three points adrift of leaders Scarlets and one point behind second-placed Leicester, Perpignan knew that with the top two facing off in Lanelli later in the day, a maximum haul from their trip to Italy would propel them right back into contention. They realised their goal but were initially made to work hard for their victory.
Indeed, the two sides went in locked together at nine points apiece at the interval, with Treviso fly-half Willem De Waal and Perpignan fullback Jerome Porical both showing impressive accuracy off the kicking tee during a tightly-contested opening 40 minutes.
However, the visitors made a decisive breakthrough shortly after the restart, with blindside flanker Gregory le Corvec forcing his way over the whitewash for the game's opening try. Treviso's resistance now broken, the Catalans then racked up two tries in the space of four minutes before the hour mark, through winger Farid Sid and fly-half Nicolas Laharrague, to put the result beyond all doubt.
Perpignan sealed the bonus point they were so badly craving when Julien Candelon touched down with just nine minutes to play and the winger added another for good measure in the dying seconds to put the seal on a fine win which means that the Top 14 side will almost certainly progress to the quarter-finals with a win over the Scarlets at the Stade Aime Giral next weekend.
