1999
A lacklustre All Blacks finished fourth at the World Cup, losing the play-off 18-22 against South Africa. In front of 53,000 at the Millennium Stadium New Zealand were undone by a try from Breyton Paulse and three penalties from fly-half Henry Honiball. Fullback Percy Montgomery landed two drop-goals, with all of New Zealand's points coming from the kicking tee courtesy of Andrew Mehrtens.
1966
Roger Addison, a 21-year-old Pontypool prop, broke his neck in a scrum during the club's away match at Rugby. The player's life was saved when the kiss-of-life was administered by the home side's president and three players, who took it in turns before an ambulance arrived - it later emerged he had been choking on chewing gum which lodged in his windpipe. After being transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he remained for three years, he moved to Rookwood in Cardiff, where he has been ever since. "Roger has this huge belief that he is here for a purpose," said Arthur Crane, an official at his old club. "He has been an inspiration."
1980
Former All Blacks flanker Jerry Collins was born in Apia, Samoa. Collins, a bruising blindside and sometime No.8, made his international debut against Argentina in Christchurch in 2001. He had to wait two years for his next cap but was duly included in the New Zealand squad for their failed run at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Collins played all three Tests against the British & Irish Lions in 2005 before helping the All Blacks to the Tri-Nations title and a Grand Slam tour. He played his final Test in the All Blacks' infamous quarter-final exit from the 2007 Rugby World Cup at the hands of France. Collins played his provincial rugby in New Zealand for Wellington and graduated in to the Hurricanes setup in Super Rugby. Following his international retirement Collins agreed a deal with French Top 14 side Toulon and subsequently joined Magners League side Ospreys in 2009. In 2007 Collins famously turned out for Barnstaple's Second XV while on holiday in Devon and wore the club's socks while playing for the Barbarians.
2000
The United States Eagles, beaten 53-6 by Scotland at Murrayfield, unusually kept the same 15 players on the field for the entire 80 minutes, using no replacements. Gregor Townsend and John Leslie scored two tries apiece for the Scots, with Townsend finishing with a 33-point haul after kicking five penalties and four conversions.
1967
The All Blacks, coached by Fred Allan, gave a scintillating display at Twickenham and scored four converted tries on their way to a 23-11 victory over England. Centre Robert Lloyd scored twice for England but the home side were overrun by a brace of tries from Earle Kirton, Bill Birtwistle, Malcolm Dick and Chrsi Laidlaw.
1950
The Lions, Wales and Cardiff utility back Billy Cleaver announced after playing in Cardiff's 21-12 win over Bridgend that he is to retire from top-class rugby at the age of 28.
1972
Ian Kirkpatrick's All Blacks picked themselves up admirably after their defeat at Llanelli to beat a strong Cardiff side 20-4 at the Arms Park.
1975
The Wallabies staged a brilliant comeback to draw 28-28 in a thrilling match against Llanelli having trailed by a dozen points a quarter of an hour from time.
