Profile

Derek McGrath is the chief executive of the highly successful European Rugby Cup.

McGrath is a former Irish international, winning five caps during the 1980s. He is perhaps best remembered as a player for his outstanding display from the flank during Ireland's 1987 World Cup quarter final against Australia.

By the time of the 1987 World Cup, McGrath was a qualified veterinary surgeon operating out of Cork and playing for Munster.

In 2000 he took his current job with the ERC, just as the Heineken Cup was beginning to find its feet as a competition.

Since his involvement the Heineken Cup has grown to become the most prestigious and exciting club rugby competition in the northern hemisphere.

Crucial to this rise has been the exposure generated by television deals with Sky Sports and the continuing sponsorship and support of Heineken.

Under McGrath the Cup has grown as an example of professionalism finding its feet. The opening competitions were hampered by a lack of support and coverage, but McGrath and the current board have been able to sell the concept to a wider audience and secure a bright future for northern hemisphere club competition.

The Heineken Cup now possesses such a high profile that it is one of the major reasons for the recent exodus of southern hemisphere players to northern hemisphere clubs.

McGrath is now based in Dublin at the ERC headquarters and manages a dedicated staff of 11 alongside his commitments to the board of directors.
