A lock or flanker, Shawn Mackay was born in Sydney, the son of Newtown and Eastern Suburbs rugby league player John Mackay, and spent time playing rugby league for the Sydney Roosters before switching codes to rugby union in 2004.

Mackay was an immediate hit with the Australia Sevens side from 2004, and was promoted to captain in his second season in union. At club level he represented the NSW Waratahs in each of their Australian Provincial Championship matches in 2006 toured the UK with their development squad later that year. Following his time with the Waratahs he joined Brisbane club University before winning a rookie contract with Super 14 side Brumbies in 2009.

In April 2009 Mackay was involved in a collision with a vehicle following the Brumbies' loss to the Sharks in Durban. After undergoing surgery for a broken leg, fractured skull and spinal damage Mackay died from complications arising from a blood infection, aged 26.
