The gifted Robertson was a mainstay for the All Blacks for much of the 1970s and early 1980s although his Test appearances were limited by a series of serious injuries.
He made his bow for the Counties Union side in 1971 as a 19-year-old and also made an impact playing for the North Island side in that year's inter-island match. He was later chosen for the All Blacks' internal tour in 1972 and made his Test debut against Australia.
Robertson arguably reached his peak in the 1977 series victory over the British & Irish Lions and then on the Grand Slam tour of Britain in 1978 - scoring a try in the historic victory over Scotland at Murrayfield.
On a political and personal principle Robertson joined the then Test captain Graham Mourie in declaring himself unavailable for the series against the Springboks in New Zealand in 1981.
Robertson's last appearance for the All Blacks was in the 1981 Test against Scotland at Eden Park and he bowed out on an appropriately high note, scoring a try.
He later assisted the Blues at Super 12 level, the New Zealand Colts and served as coach of Counties-Manukau in the NPC second division in 2002-03.
