Educated at Rugby, Frank Tobin played in England's first rugby international against Scotland in Edinburgh in March 1871 as well as the return match the following year. Soon after he left for Lima, where he lived for 12 years and commanded the fire brigade, returning to become a stockbroker in Liverpool. In the Great War he helped run a hospital for wounded officers in Liverpool. He was also a good cricketer and an excellent shot, winning several national titles at the National Rifle Meeting.
