Benjamin Burns was secretary of Blackheath at the time the challenge from Scotland for an England side to travel north to play them was received in early 1871, and he was instrumental in accepting it and helping to raise the 20-man side. He was not originally supposed to take part, but when Francis Isherwood had to withdraw, Burns stepped in and so played in England's first rugby international in Edinburgh on March 27. In late 1870, along with Edwin Ash of Richmond, Burns had published a letter in the Times calling for "those who play the rugby-type game [to] meet to form a code of practice as various clubs play to rules which differ from others, which makes the game difficult to play." That took place on January 26, 1871 and led to the formation of the RFU.
