Profile

Wales fullback Morgan Stoddart's early career was spent as a fly-half for Treorchy in the Welsh first division, before the side's relegation led to a trial with Pontypridd at the end of the 2005-06 season.

Stoddart was successful in his bid, and secured a contract with the Premiership club, switching to full-back and cementing himself as one of the Sardis Road side's most important players. After helping Ponty to a win over Neath in the 2006 Konica Minolta Cup final, Stoddart signed a professional deal with Llanelli Scarlets.

During the 2006-07 season, Stoddart played understudy to Barry Davies at the Scarlets, turning out mainly for Llanelli RFC and occasionally making his mark on the regional side. Towards the end of the season, Stoddart received a run in the side, making nine appearances and notching a long-range try against Ulster in the Heineken Cup. At the end of the season he was named as the Welsh Premiership player of the year.

With Barry Davies leaving the Scarlets for Brive at the end of the season, Stoddart was given a chance to shine in the 2007-08 season. His early season form saw him win a call-up to the Wales squad for the one-off international against South Africa in November 2007. Stoddart started the match and crossed for his first try on debut.

Stoddart's chances have been limited since this time, with Lee Byrne's imperious form and the emergence initially of Jamie Roberts restricting his international chances. Stoddart was included in Warren Gatland's squad for the 2008 autumn internationals, starting against Canada and scoring his second Test try.

In January 2011 he was recalled to the Wales squad for the Six Nations tournament, three years after his last international cap. Stoddart scored tries against England and Italy in what was a strong tournament for the player, if not the team.

His performances ensured he was part of Warren Gatland's plans for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. However in the first warm-up game for the tournament against England at Twickenham, the fullback suffered a shocking leg-break that ended his World Cup hopes.
