Profile

Deacon joined Leicester Tigers' academy in 1997 having represented England at Under-16 and 18 levels. He rose through the ranks and was handed his first professional deal in 2000, making his debut against Cardiff in August of that year.

He became an integral member of the Tigers squad and increasingly came out of the shadows of team-mates Martin Johnson and Ben Kay after the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Established in the Leicester line-up, Deacon was called up to the Enlgand set up in 2005 and made his debut against Samoa. He remained in and around the England camp, starting the 2007 Six Nations but missing out on the World Cup squad later in the year, without nailing down a regular place.

Injury ruled him out of the 2008 end of season tour to New Zealand and he would have to wait until 2009 before earning an England recall. During this time he continued to play an important role in Leciester's domestic success, winning the Players' Player of the Season award for a second time in 2007-08.

He returned to England's elite squad for the 2009-10 season but soon fell out of favour again with Tom Palmer, Courtney Lawes, Simon Shaw and Dave Attwood England's prefered locks at the start of the following season.

However, after some impressive performances for Leicester, Deacon was selected in England's 2011 Six Nations squad with Lawes injured and Attwood suspended. And after impressing alongside Palmer, Deacon did enough to force his way into the World Cup reckoning having been named in Martin Johnson's 30-man squad for the tournament. Deacon was one of England's more consistent performers during the tournament, which ended in defeat to France at the quarter-final stage.
