Profile

Tight-head prop Murray made his international bow for Scotland against Romania in Bucharest in 2005 having made his non-cap debut against the Barbarians 12 days earlier.

Murray has since gone on to become the cornerstone of a powerful Scotland pack, cementing his place in the front row as Scotland improved their performances under coach Frank Hadden and then Andy Robinson. Murray was a constant presence throughout the 2007 Six Nations and was rewarded with a place in Scotland's squad for the Rugby World Cup in France later that same year.

Murray went on to make four appearances during the tournament as Scotland exited at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Argentina. Just before the World Cup, Murray made the switch from Magners League side Glasgow to Guinness Premiership outfit Northampton Saints.

Commanding performances against New Zealand, South Africa and Canada during the 2008 autumn international series saw Murray tipped for British & Irish Lions honours and he was duly named in the squad to tour South Africa after another impressive Six Nations showing in 2009.

However, he suffered an ankle injury in a midweek match against the Southern Kings and subsequently returned home before the Test series. Later in 2009, he announced that he would no longer be available for Sunday internationals due to his religious beliefs and as a result missed Scotland's 2010 Six Nations opener against France.

His international commitments meant he missed Northampton's Anglo-Welsh Cup triumph in 2010 and injury woe would strike again ahead of Scotland's tour to Argentina that year with Murray sidelined with ankle problems.

Injuries and the impressive form of Brian Mujati then restricted Murray to just for appearances for the Saints during the 2010/2011 season before the club sensationally announced in December that the player was leaving the club with immediate effect and by mutual consent, throwing the devout Christian's future in the game into doubt.

A few weeks later he announced that he would be joining Newcastle where he linked up with former Scotland international Alan Tait.
