Wales blindside flanker Jonathan Thomas made his debut on Wales' 2003 summer tour of Australia before taking a starring role in the 2003 World Cup. Thomas' barnstorming performance against New Zealand in the final group game announced his talents to the wider rugby community, and ensured him a place in the Wales squad following the tournament.
He originally struggled to emulate the form that he showed in Australia, and was used often from the substitute's bench following the tournament. His versatility in being able to play anywhere across the back five of the scrum ensured that he remained a valuable squad member however.
Thomas made four appearances during Wales' 2005 Grand Slam, including a start against Italy, before playing both games of Wales' summer tour to the USA and Canada. Thomas only made two substitute appearances during the 2006 Six Nations, but started three of Wales' Autumn Internationals, scoring a brace of tries against Canada.
It was back to the replacements bench for the 2007 Six Nations, before he impressed from Number 8 on Wales' tour of Australia in the summer of 2007. Thomas secured his place in Gareth Jenkins' 2007 World Cup squad, but only featured against Canada and Australia, against whom he scored a consolation try.
Following the World Cup, Thomas has found himself back in favour with Wales under new coach Warren Gatland. He started every match of Wales' Grand Slam wining Six Nations in 2008, providing the glue in the back row alongside Ryan Jones and Martyn Williams.
His development at international level has also been emulated at club level, where he has become an important part of the Ospreys back row alongside Ryan Jones and Marty Holah.
Thomas started both of Wales' tests with South Africa in the summer of 2007, playing the first from 6 and the second from the openside flank. In tough conditions Thomas and Wales came off second best, but his international stock was raised even more by combative performances against one of the world's best back rows.
