A former representative of Pontypridd and Australian club Gordon, Gareth Williams joined Cardiff Blues on the regionalisation of Welsh rugby in 2003.
A former Wales captain at age-grade level, Williams progressed to Wales 'A' level in 2001-02 before winning his first full cap against Italy during the 2003 Six Nations. His first start came in a defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield later in the tournament, but he would not play at international level again until Wales' 2009 summer tour to North America.
He was called up to Warren Gatland's Wales squad for the 2010 Six Nations after some strong displays for the Blues and was drafted into the starting line-up against England at Twickenham following an injury to Matthew Rees.
