Profile

A long stint in Leicester's 'boot room' gave this former first-class fullback the coaching and managerial experience to be co-partner in guiding Leeds to Premiership safety at the end of 2009-10 season.

Alongside head coach Neil Back, Key proved to be an astute director of rugby. At Leicester, Key worked in a succession of management teams led by Dean Richards, Pat Howard and Marcelo Loffreda. His work included backs coach, academy manager and head of player development.

Key was born in Market Harborough, educated at Welland Park High School, Market Harborough Grammar School and Leicester Polytechnic. He played for Tigers, following in his father's footsteps, between 1975 and 1981 and again from 1987-92.

In between these two periods he played for Bedford and Nottingham. Key and Back were appointed by Leeds in June 2008 following relegation to National League One. They took the Headingley-based side back into the Premiership at the first time of asking and then surprised most pundits by steering their under-funded squad to safety in the 2009-10 camapaign. Key was later named as Guinness Premiership Director of Rubgy of the Season. Key's father, Maurice, played for Tigers in the late '50s while his two brothers, Richard and Lance, have both been professional footballers.
