A South African international at Schools and age-grade level, Hargreaves made his name with the Sharks, winning the Currie Cup in 2010. As further reward for a strong season, the lock won a maiden Springbok call-up later that year and made replacement appearances against Wales and Italy on tour. In July 2011 he was handed a first Test start - against Australia in Sydney - following an injury to Johann Muller.
