Scarlets gain easy win in poor game
November 13, 1999
In a scrappy Welsh-Scottish League match of much endeavour but little accomplishment Llanelli retained their second place in the table with a 37-9 win over Edinburgh Reivers
It was all fast, furious and frantic but with enough mistakes to last both sides for the rest of the season.
There were just three tries - one early and two late - sandwiching plenty of mediocrity in between.
The first was scored by Llanelli flanker Ian Boobyer midway through the first half after his back row colleague Hywel Jenkins had pinched an Edinburgh line-out throw a couple of yards from the line.
Fly-half Stephen Jones converted, to add to his opening penalty goal in the first minute - and then the Wales World Cup squad man proceeded to dominate the scoring as he added five more penalties as the error count mounted.
A good drop goal from 40 yards by centre Chris Paterson after Boobyer's try kept Edinburgh in the hunt briefly before Jones added his second penalty to put his side 13-3 ahead at the turnaround.
Then the penalty awards came thick and fast. In the first 13 minutes of the second half Jones landed three more goals and Edinburgh's Duncan Hodge two. Jones went on to collect another before, at last, there was something for the bored spectators to get excited about.
In the last five minutes Llanelli suddenly found the composure which had eluded them for so long as replacement fly-half Craig Warlow and Chris Wyatt bagged tries, one of which Jones converted.
