Profile

A fullback known for his versatility and reliability, Gavin Duffy has been one of the finest servants of Connacht rugby over the past decade.

Although Duffy represented Ireland at schools level in 1998, there was still every chance that he might turn his back on union to pursue a career in Gaelic Games because he was a part of the Mayo side beaten by Down in the 1999 All-Ireland minor final. However, he focused himself on rugby and was capped by the Irish Under-21s the following year. After breaking into the Connacht first team during the 2000-2001 season, he was then capped by the Ireland A side.

Duffy quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young backs in Irish rugby and, after rejecting the advances of Munster, he signed for Premiership outfit Harlequins in 2003. He made his Test debut as a replacement on Ireland's Tour of South Africa the following summer just after helping Quins win the Challenge Cup.

After making another appearance in the 2005 Six Nations clash with Scotland, he was then handed his first start, against Japan in Osaka later that summer. He started again against the Japanese a week later and helped himself to two tries, his first in international rugby.

Despite making 50 league appearances for Quins, he rejoined Connacht in 2006 and was the only player from the province to make the Ireland squad for the 2007 World Cup. He made just one appearance in France, tough, coming on as a replacement in the final pool game against Argentina.

Duffy has earned just two further caps for his country, on the 2009 tour of North America, but he was called into the Ireland squad for the 2011 Six Nations after a spate of injury-enforced withdrawals.
