Mallinder: Foden will play fullback

England boss Stuart Lancaster started Foden on the flank in two of the three Tests with South Africa with Mike Brown and Alex Goode filling in at fullback. While Foden may yet start for England at fullback come the autumn internationals you'd expect that Lancaster would want Foden playing on the wing at club level if that's where he sees his international future lying.
But Mallinder will ignore any overtures from England and keep Foden at the back of the field for the Saints rather than on the wing. "I wasn't surprised (Foden played on the wing for England) because Stuart Lancaster had talked about playing him there," Mallinder told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo. "They were struggling on the winger front but for us Ben Foden is a full-back and you get more space, time and more ball than you do on the wing.
"He didn't look out of place on the wing at all but we won't be considering him as a winger. He's our fullback, that's his best position but he's like that, he'll play anywhere in an England shirt and I thought he did really well playing on the wing."
