Profile

Hanks renewed his acquaintance with Wasps after replacing Ian McGeechan as director of rugby in May 2009. Hanks initially linked up with Wasps in 2002 during Warren Gatland's coaching reign. He left in 2005, returning to New Zealand, and was latterly Waikato's head coach. He also spent time with Wasps during the 2009 season, working on secondment between November and April to support the coaching staff of McGeechan, Shaun Edwards and Leon Holden while McGeechan and Edwards prepared for the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour.

But following a reasonable first year in the post, Hanks was dismissed in February 2011 following a run of just one win in six games. He would make a swift return to the Premiership as first team coach at Sale but his time with the Sharks came to an abrupt halt in March 2012 in the wake of a 45-9 defeat at the hands of defending champions Saracens.
