Premiership Rugby has confirmed that the 2012-13 season will kick off on September 1 with the traditional 'London Double Header' opening the curtain on the new campaign. The double header was first instigated in 2004 and has proved to be a popular opening event but the 2012-13 season will see a change to the usual format. For the first time, each of the four teams will be given designated areas of Twickenham Stadium. Premiership Rugby have also moved to put into place contingency plans if Wasps are relegated. Last year's event saw Harlequins, Saracens, London Irish and Wasps all taking part but with Wasps lying just four points above basement side Newcastle Falcons, there is a chance they may be relegated to England's second-tier competition. If Wasps do lose their bid to retain their top-flight status then they will be replaced by another side for the traditional curtain raiser. The Premiership fixtures for the forthcoming season will be confirmed in July. © ESPN EMEA Ltd
