Sale prop Jack Forster has suffered a setback in his recovery from a chronic neck problem.
The 24-year-old has played 24 times for the Sharks since agreeing a move from Gloucester in 2009, with the club refusing to place a timeframe on a possible comeback.
"This setback comes after Jack has worked so hard to regain full fitness," executive director of sport Steve Diamond said.
"He is a very popular member of the squad and we are going to continue to help Jack with his rehabilitation in an effort to help him overcome this injury.
"Jack will be staying involved with the club and we will be monitoring his progress regularly. We have not set a time limit on Jack's return, but he is a young and very committed professional and is very keen on wanting to play for us again in the future."
