Cash-strapped Fiji sack coach Male

January 27, 2014

The cash-strapped Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sacked coach Inoke Male less than a month before it starts its defence of the Pacific Rugby Cup.

Male was one of five coaches dismissed as part of a restructuring process that follows the IRB's decision to suspend all financial aid after failures to address concerns over administration and governance. It means the FRU is without a support network which last year supplied them £1.1 million in direct funding.

Fiji are due to defend their Pacific Rugby Cup at the end of February against the likes of Tonga, Samoa, an Argentine XV and development teams from Australian Super Rugby sides. The FRU has not confirmed how much money it will save from the dismissals.

Coach Male admits he had no say in the decision to part company with Fiji.

"My termination is out of my power. That is something the FRU board has decided," he said.

"I would have loved to have taken the team to the Pacific Rugby Cup, the World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands and the Test matches in Europe in November."
