World Cup winner Piri Weepu has signed a contract extension with Auckland-based Super Rugby outfit the Blues.

The scrum-half signed from the Hurricanes after he had played a major role in the All Blacks ending their 24-year wait for the World Cup. He only enjoyed a mixed debut season in Auckland in which questions were raised over his fitness and professionalism, but he made 15 appearances and scored 24 points.

He also retained his place in the All Blacks squad, though began all three Tests against Ireland on the bench, with Aaron Smith starting at scrum-half.

He wrote on his Twitter account, "It's official.... Sign, sealed, delivered!! Stay with the blues next season. #Happy."

Weepu's new contract means he is likely to play a major role under new Blues coach John Kirwan, but he will be without senior players Jerome Kaino, Benson Stanley, Isaia Toeava and Lachie Munro who have all journeyed to pastures new.
