Australia get revenge on the Lions

2001
The British & Irish Lions surrendered an 11-6 half-time lead at the Colonial Stadium, Melbourne on their way to a 35-14 defeat to Australia. Two tries from Joe Roff and one for fullback Matt Burke, who also kicked six penalties and one conversion, ensured the Wallabies levelled the three-Test series. Neil Back scored the game's opening try in the first-half but the hosts went on to record their biggest win over the tourists and completed the job with a 29-23 victory in the series decider in Sydney.
1965
Jerry Guscott was born in Bath. He went on to represent his hometown club for the whole of his playing career and was acclaimed as one of the great English centres. He earned further honours with England including a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles and also represented his country at three World Cups, including starting in the final in 1991. Guscott also toured twice with the British & Irish Lions - sharing in their success against Australia in 1989 and South Africa in 1997, memorably scoring the series-clinching drop goal against the Springboks in the second Test in Durban.
1910
The English flanker Cherry Pillman was in fine kicking form for the Lions, landing six conversions as well as scoring one of their eleven tries in a 45-4 victory against the Transvaal Country XV. Reg Plummer scored a hat-trick of tries for the tourists in Johannesburg.
1979
The French touring side were beaten 23-9 by New Zealand at Lancaster Park in the first Test of a two-match mini-series. The All Blacks scored three tries to one with full-back Bevan Wilson kicking three penalties and a conversion. Wings Stu Wilson and Murray Watts scored a try apiece for the hosts as did scrum-half Mark Donaldson. Centre Patrick Mesny scored France's consolation try in Christchurch.
1928
The All Blacks, reeling after their 17-0 Test defeat by the Springboks the week before, struggled to hold the North Provinces to an 18-18 draw in Kimberley.
1937
In Australia, Gerry Brand equalled his own Springbok record for most points in a match, kicking 24 points in the tourists' 60-0 win against Toowoomba.
1956
'Salty' du Rand led the Springboks in a tough encounter with Otago at Carisbrook. The tourists relied on the goal-kicking of their full-back, Roy Dryburgh, who landed a conversion and two penalties to see South Africa to a 14-9 victory.
1962
The Lions staged a second-half recovery to beat the Junior Springboks 16-11 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The tourists were trailing 6-3 at the break but tries from Haydn Morgan and Ken Jones spared them any blushes.
1973
Gerald Bosch scored 36 points, a then Currie Cup record, for Transvaal against Far North in Johannesburg.
